What IGL Coatings is
IGL Coatings is a Malaysian manufacturer whose positioning is chemistry rather than branding: it calls itself the world pioneer of low and zero VOC high-solids ceramic coatings, and sells that as being safer for the installer as much as for the car. The automotive line is sold under the ecocoat name.
That solvent claim is the thing to understand. A coating's solids are what stays on the paint once the carrier evaporates; the rest is solvent that flashes off. IGL publishes the split product by product — ecocoat quartz is 80% active material and 20% solvent, while the flagship ecocoat kenzo is 100% active material and 0% solvent. A higher solids figure is how IGL gets what it calls a thick film build.
The ecocoat range
Hardness figures below are pencil-scale, which is how IGL states them. That is not the same scale as the Mohs numbers some rival brands quote, so the two are not directly comparable — a 10H pencil rating and a Mohs figure are measuring different things.
| Coating | What it is | Hardness (pencil) | Stated durability | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ecocoat kenzo (graphene reinforced) | Flagship two-part base and topcoat system, 100% active material and 0% solvent, with graphene nano-platelets | Up to 10H | Up to 5 years — rated up to 5 years / 100,000 km when fitted by an IGL Kenzo Master Installer | Detailers only, Kenzo training required |
| ecocoat arcane | Single-layer graphene coating, water-safe after two hours, 105° water contact angle, for paint, PPF and vinyl | 9H | Up to 4 years | Detailers only |
| ecocoat quartz | REACH-compliant low-VOC high-solids coating, 80% active material and 20% solvent | Up to 9H | Up to 2 years | Detailers only |
| ecocoat EZ | Graphene-reinforced low-solids one-layer coating for paint, glass and wheels — not trim or plastics | Up to 8H | Up to 12 months | Detailer-friendly entry coating |
The durability rating, and what it demands of you
IGL rates ecocoat kenzo at up to five years or 100,000 km, but the wording is specific: that rating applies when the coating is installed by an IGL Kenzo Master Installer and properly maintained. The rating starts from the date of the invoice, and it is personal to the buyer — IGL states durability ratings are not transferable or assignable, so it does not follow the car to its next owner.
Maintenance is not optional. IGL requires the vehicle to be inspected every six months by an authorised installer, with any cleaning needed for that inspection at the owner's cost. Cover is for the coating failing — blistering, bubbling, cracking, delamination, peeling, or a noticeable loss of gloss and reflectivity. It is not paint insurance: chips, scratches and mechanical damage, accidental or deliberate damage, commercial vehicle use, damage caused by third-party abrasive products, and neglect of the maintenance terms are all excluded. If something does go wrong, you have 14 days from when it happens to tell the installer who did the work.
How the range behaves in a UAE workshop
Two published figures matter more here than elsewhere. Ecocoat arcane is a single-layer coating IGL rates as water-safe after two hours, with a 105° water contact angle — a short safe-to-move window is genuinely useful in a busy Dubai shop working through a queue. Ecocoat EZ sits at the other end: one layer, up to 8H, up to 12 months, which makes it a service-interval coating rather than a multi-year investment, and it should be priced and sold as one.
The six-month inspection cycle on kenzo is also worth planning around. It is twice as often as the annual check most brands ask for, and it ties you to the installer who did the original job. Proximity to your home or office is therefore a practical consideration, not a detail.
Verifying a genuine IGL install
IGL restricts its serious coatings. Kenzo, arcane and quartz are all marked detailers-only rather than sold at retail, and kenzo specifically requires installer training, which is how IGL keeps its Master Installer network small. If a shop is quoting you a kenzo job, it should be able to evidence that status — and the five-year rating depends on it, because an install by anyone else is not rated at all.
In the UAE, IGL is applied through its network of approved detailers rather than sold over the counter, and the brand's own distributor and detailer network is the place to confirm a studio before you book. Get the coating named on the invoice, since the durability period runs from that date, and diarise the six-month inspections from day one.
IGL Coatings — common questions
- How long does IGL ecocoat kenzo actually last?
- IGL rates it at up to five years or 100,000 km, and only when an IGL Kenzo Master Installer applies it and the maintenance schedule is followed. Graphene reinforcement is what IGL credits for the extra durability and the improved water-spot resistance over the previous formulation.
- What does '100% active material' mean, and does it matter?
- It means nothing evaporates off — everything in the bottle stays on the paint, giving what IGL calls a thick film build. For comparison, IGL states ecocoat quartz at 80% active material and 20% solvent. It is also the basis of the brand's low-VOC positioning, which matters most to the person spraying it in an enclosed bay.
- How often do I have to bring the car back?
- Every six months, to an authorised IGL installer, for the durability rating to stand. That is more frequent than the annual inspection most ceramic brands require. The cost of cleaning the car for that inspection is yours, not the installer's.
- Does the IGL rating cover stone chips and scratches?
- No. It covers the coating failing — blistering, bubbling, cracking, delamination, peeling or a noticeable loss of gloss. Paint chips, scratches, mechanical damage, accidental or intentional damage, commercial vehicle use and damage from third-party abrasive products are all excluded, as is neglect of the maintenance terms.
- Does the rating transfer if I sell the car?
- No. IGL states that durability ratings are personal to the purchaser and are not transferable or assignable, and that they commence from the date of the invoice.
- Can I buy IGL coatings and apply them myself?
- Not the main ones. Kenzo, arcane and quartz are all detailers-only, and kenzo additionally requires training certification. Ecocoat EZ is the exception IGL positions as an introductory coating for enthusiasts as well as time-conscious detailers — one layer, up to 8H, up to 12 months.
- Where can I get IGL applied in the UAE?
- Through IGL's approved detailer network — the professional coatings are not retail products, so a studio has to be an approved detailer to hold them, and a Kenzo job needs a trained Kenzo installer. Confirm that status through IGL's own network before booking, because the durability rating hangs on it.
