STEK NEX window tinting in the UAE
Window film
NEX is STEK's window film, not its paint film. It is a nano-ceramic construction using tungsten, ITO and ATO compounds with a graphene layer STEK includes for heat spreading, sold in seven shades from NEX 05 at 7% VLT to the near-clear NEX 85 at 86% VLT. STEK publishes performance for every shade, which matters in the UAE: the 64% TSER headline belongs to a shade that is illegal here.

NEX is STEK's tint — DYNO is the paint film
STEK sells two separate product families under one badge, and confusing them is the most common mistake on a Dubai quote. NEX is the window film — it goes on glass. DYNO is the paint protection film — it goes over paintwork. Different chemistry, different warranty documents, bought for different reasons, so a quote for one tells you nothing about the other.
This page is the tint side. If you came looking for STEK's paint protection film, the DYNOshield, DYNOmatte and fashion-film range has its own page on Easy Auto. Both sides are sold only through STEK's authorised installer network.
What NEX is made of, and what NEX+ changes
STEK describes NEX as premium nano-ceramic with graphene technology, built from tungsten, ITO and ATO compounds alongside the graphene. Graphene is in there for heat spreading — STEK's own analogy is "the same material that high-end electronics manufacturers use to cool batteries", dispersing absorbed heat so the ceramic particles can work more effectively. That is a different mechanism from a dyed or carbon film, which mostly just absorbs and re-radiates.
NEX+ is the newer construction in the same family. STEK claims improved heat rejection, anti-scratch technology, a truer and more consistent black, and multi-directional shrinkage that makes the film easier to lay on curved glass — but publishes no separate performance table for it. Ask which of the two your installer is actually fitting.
Every shade published — and the one that is legal here
STEK publishes a full per-shade table for the NEX series, measured as IRER across 780–2,500nm, and says it follows the International Window Film Association's IRER standardisation. That makes the range unusually easy to check honestly — and it exposes something the marketing does not.
The headline figures you see quoted everywhere — 64% total solar energy rejected, 93% solar infrared rejection — belong to NEX 05 at 7% VLT. That shade is not legal on a private car here. Dubai caps side and rear windows at 50% VLT and requires the windshield to stay clear apart from a narrow strip at the top, and the limit varies by emirate. Fit a shade under the limit and you are risking a fine and a failed registration renewal — our UAE tint law guide carries the current figures. So NEX 45, at 45% VLT, is the darkest NEX you can legally run on the sides, and its real numbers are 52% TSER and 90% SIRR. Still excellent. Just not the brochure figure.
| Shade | VLT | IRER (780–2,500nm) | SIRR | TSER | Glare reduction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NEX 05 | 7% | 66% | 93% | 64% | 92% |
| NEX 15 | 15% | 64% | 91% | 61% | 83% |
| NEX 20 | 20% | 65% | 92% | 60% | 78% |
| NEX 35 | 34% | 63% | 92% | 56% | 63% |
| NEX 45 | 45% | 63% | 90% | 52% | 50% |
| NEX 70 | 66% | 62% | 91% | 46% | 27% |
| NEX 85 | 86% | 36% | 56% | 28% | 5% |
NEX 85 and the windshield question
NEX 85 is the near-clear shade at 86% VLT, and it is the one people ask about for windshields. STEK builds it around ITO rather than a darkening layer, which is how it keeps glass looking untinted. Be clear-eyed about what that costs: 36% IRER and 28% TSER, the weakest performance in the range by a wide margin, because there is so little in the way of the light.
It still blocks 99% of UV, which is the part that bakes a dashboard. Treat NEX 85 as UV and mild heat insurance for glass you cannot legally darken — and confirm windshield application with your installer against the current rules in your emirate before booking.
The warranty: lifetime means your ownership
NEX carries a limited lifetime warranty, and the word lifetime does a lot of work. Cover runs from the date of installation through the original registered owner's period of ownership and terminates when the vehicle is sold; it is not transferable. It applies only where an authorised STEK installer or dealer fitted the film. NEX is warranted against fading to purple, and STEK's published NEX+ terms list fading, delamination, bubbling and cracking.
Exclusions include improper maintenance or cleaning, product abuse, glass breakage and non-automotive applications. STEK also states the film must be used in compliance with applicable local law — which in the UAE means an illegal shade can cost you the warranty as well as the fine. Claims need the warranty card, the original installer invoice and the dealer invoice number, so keep all three from the day it is fitted.
Getting a genuine NEX install in Dubai
STEK runs a public installer locator on its own site, and the warranty only exists where an authorised installer did the work, so check the shop there before you book. Easy Auto's Dubai window tinting hub lists tint specialists across the city if you want to compare workshops first.
Then ask each one which STEK range they actually stock, because NEX, SMART, ICY, ACTION, VISION 70 and DYNOtint are different films at different tiers and every one of them is "STEK". Two more questions worth asking on the phone: which NEX shade goes on which window, and whether they will meter the film's VLT before fitting. A shop that does both unprompted has done this before.
STEK NEX — common questions
- Is STEK NEX the same as STEK PPF?
- No. NEX is STEK's window film and goes on glass; the DYNO series (DYNOshield, DYNOmatte, the fashion films) is paint protection film and goes over paintwork. They use different technology and carry entirely separate warranty documents, so a STEK tint quote tells you nothing about a STEK PPF quote. Our STEK paint protection film page covers the DYNO side in full.
- What is the darkest legal STEK NEX shade in Dubai?
- NEX 45, at 45% VLT. Dubai allows a minimum of 50% VLT on side and rear windows of private cars — and the limit varies by emirate — so NEX 05, 15, 20 and 35 are all below the limit. NEX 45's published figures are 52% TSER, 90% SIRR and 63% IRER — strong numbers, but not the 64% TSER headline, which belongs to the 7% VLT NEX 05.
- How much heat does STEK NEX actually reject?
- It depends entirely on the shade, and STEK publishes every one. TSER runs from 64% at NEX 05 (7% VLT) down to 28% at NEX 85 (86% VLT); solar infrared rejection runs 93% down to 56%. At the darkest Dubai-legal shade, NEX 45, you get 52% TSER and 90% SIRR. Always ask for the figures for the shade going on your car, not the range's best number.
- What is the difference between NEX and NEX+?
- NEX+ is STEK's newer construction in the same graphene-infused ceramic family. STEK claims enhanced heat rejection, anti-scratch technology, a truer and more consistent black, and multi-directional shrinkage that makes it faster to fit on curved glass. It does not publish a separate performance table for NEX+, so the published numbers you can actually check are the NEX series figures. Ask your installer which one is on the roll.
- Is the STEK NEX warranty transferable if I sell the car?
- No. The window film warranty runs from installation through the original registered owner's period of ownership and terminates on any sale of the vehicle — it is not transferable. It also only exists where an authorised STEK installer or dealer fitted the film. Keep the warranty card, the original installer invoice and the dealer invoice number, because a claim needs all three.
- Can I put STEK NEX on my windshield in Dubai?
- Dubai requires the front windshield to stay clear apart from a narrow sun strip at the top, so any windshield film has to be near-clear. NEX 85 at 86% VLT is the shade built for that look — ITO-based rather than darkened — but its performance is the weakest in the range at 28% TSER and 36% IRER, with 99% UV rejection. Confirm the application with your installer against current UAE rules before booking.
