V-KOOL window tinting in the UAE

V-KOOL is a window film brand owned by Eastman Chemical Company, the same parent as SunTek and LLumar. It describes itself as specialising in spectrally selective sputtered window films, and says it is sold in more than 20 countries.

The films are made at an ISO-9001 certified plant in Dresden, Germany. The manufacturing process is sputtering, in which precious metals including gold and silver are deposited onto the film in vanishingly thin layers. V-KOOL says it has spent more than twenty years refining the process and is candid that it is an expensive one, which is a fair summary of why these films sit where they do in the market.

The technical claim that distinguishes V-KOOL from the ceramic films it competes against is spectral selectivity. Its XIR technology is designed to reflect selected infrared wavelengths away from the glass. V-KOOL's own position is that dyed and ceramic films absorb infrared instead, which heats the glass itself.

That distinction has a practical consequence worth understanding: an absorbing film can leave the glass hot to the touch even while the cabin is cooler, and some of that absorbed heat re-radiates inwards. A reflecting film aims to turn the energy away before it is ever absorbed. This is also why V-KOOL can deliver serious heat rejection in a film that is barely tinted, which no dyed film can do.

V-KOOL cites testing by the Advanced Materials Technology Centre at Singapore Polytechnic in March 2018 showing a dashboard surface temperature difference of between 5.3C and 9.6C against untreated glass.

Solitaire is the flagship line, and the reason to care about V-KOOL sits in the top row of its own specification sheet. V-KOOL 70 passes 71% of visible light while still rejecting 55% of total solar energy. That combination is the brand's whole reason for existing.

Practically, that means heat rejection without darkness, which matters in a market where how dark you may go on side glass is regulated, and on windscreens where dark film is not an option at all. Most films that reject half the sun's energy do it by being dark. This one does not.

Stature sits below Solitaire and is presented as the performance-with-comfort line. Its numbers are less linear than Solitaire's, and two of them are worth pausing on: X78 and X75 both transmit 78% of visible light, but X78 rejects 52% of total solar energy against X75's 42%. Same apparent clarity, materially different performance.

A third line, Signature, is described as the performance and protection option, but V-KOOL publishes no specification sheet for it. No figures are given here for that reason.

This is the single most useful thing to know before walking into a V-KOOL branch here. The UAE operation sells tint under five package names rather than the manufacturer's series names: Signature, Stature, Premium, Super Premium and Royal, advertised as up to 65%, 70%, 78%, 85% and 95% heat rejection respectively.

Those headline figures are not Total Solar Energy Rejection. The highest TSER Eastman publishes for any Solitaire film is 74%, on the darkest shade in the range. The larger numbers are the kind produced by Selective IR Rejection, which measures only the infrared band rather than the full solar spectrum. Both are real measurements; they are not interchangeable, and the UAE page does not say which it is quoting.

So ask two questions before signing: which manufacturer film and shade is in this package, and what is its TSER. Cross-check the answer against the tables above. A package sold on a 95% headline may well be an excellent film, but it is not rejecting 95% of the sun's heat.

V-KOOL is unusual among premium film brands here in having a formally listed UAE arm. V-KOOL (Emirates) Trading LLC is linked directly from the brand's global site as its UAE operation, is part of KAPICO Investments LLC under Kuwait's KAPICO Group Holding Co, states more than 25 years in the country, and covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah.

On warranty, be careful. V-KOOL's global site has a limited warranty page that does not publish the actual terms, and the UAE site advertises different periods against different packages without setting out what is covered. No duration is quoted here because the published sources do not agree, and a wrong warranty term is worse than none. Get the period, the covered failure modes such as colour change, peeling, cracking, delamination and adhesive failure, and any registration requirement in writing at handover.

One more question worth asking: because these are metal-sputtered films rather than the non-metal ceramics many rivals sell on, and V-KOOL's technology page makes no signal-friendly claim either way, ask the installer directly about mobile signal, Salik tags and tyre-pressure sensors on your specific car before the film goes on.
