What moves a wrap quote
Three things separate the bottom and top of each band. The first is the vinyl itself: cast film is the material that conforms to curves and stays put for years, and the manufacturers behind it — Hexis among them, a French maker whose catalogue spans wrapping vinyl and paint protection film — publish their own warranties. Ask which brand and which line, and get it written on the invoice.
The second is disassembly. A proper wrap comes with door handles, badges, mirror caps, lights and often bumpers removed so the film can be tucked behind edges rather than trimmed against them. That is the difference between a wrap that survives a Dubai summer and one that starts peeling at the door shuts by month four. It is also most of the labour, which is why a full wrap takes two to four days.
The third is the paint underneath. Vinyl needs healthy factory paint to bond to and release from. Resprayed panels, previous accident repairs and failing lacquer can lift with the film when it comes off, so any shop worth booking inspects the car and tells you before wrapping, not after.
The Dubai colour-change rules
If a wrap visibly changes your car's colour, it is a registration matter, not just a styling choice. In Dubai the route is a Police Colour Change Request first, and then the car has to be presented at the RTA within 30 days of the police NOC. Each emirate runs its own version of this, so if the car is registered outside Dubai, confirm the process for that emirate before you book the bay.
Two practical points follow. Chrome, fluorescent and retroreflective wraps are not permitted on private cars, so a mirror-finish quote is a problem regardless of price. And a wrap in the same shade as your registered colour — satin black on a black car, a gloss respray-look in the original colour — is a different conversation from a genuine colour change; ask the shop to confirm which one your chosen film counts as before the deposit.
A wrap does not touch glass, so tint is a separate matter with its own rules. Dubai allows a maximum 50% tint on side and rear glass, meaning the glass must still transmit at least half the visible light, and the windshield stays clear apart from a narrow sun strip along the top. How long a wrap lasts in Dubai
Quality cast vinyl is rated at 3–7 years, and Dubai lands at the shorter end of that. Dark panels reach 80–95°C in direct sun, UV is relentless, and the airborne sand across the city is silica at Mohs hardness 7 — harder than clear coat, and far harder than a 3–4 mil decorative film. Horizontal panels go first: bonnet, roof and boot lid fade and chalk while the doors still look new.
Care extends it more than brand choice does. Hand-wash rather than brush-wash, keep pressure lances off the seams and edges, and get bird droppings and sprinkler overspray off promptly instead of at the weekend — hard water dries into mineral deposits that stain matte and satin film permanently. Matte finishes cannot be polished at all, on vinyl or on film, so a mark is a mark.
Wrap, PPF or both?
These get quoted interchangeably in Dubai showrooms and they are not interchangeable. A wrap is appearance first, with light scuff protection while it is on, and it is fully reversible. Paint protection film is impact protection first, usually clear, roughly 8 mil of self-healing urethane that absorbs stone chips a wrap cannot. Choosing a wrap shop in Dubai
Ask five questions and the field narrows fast. Which cast vinyl brand and line, and what warranty comes with it? Will handles, badges, mirrors and lights come off, or is the film being trimmed in place? How many days will the car be in? Will they inspect the paint and tell you if any panel has been resprayed? And will they walk you through the colour-change process rather than leaving you to discover it at renewal?
On collection, the tells are physical. Look along the edges of the door shuts and the bonnet: tucked film feels continuous, trimmed film leaves a hard line that collects dirt within weeks. Check the recesses around handles and badges, and check the bumper corners, where a rushed wrap lifts first. Removal is the last thing to ask about — done properly with heat, vinyl comes off healthy factory paint cleanly, which is the reason to wrap rather than respray in the first place.
