Key facts
- PPF is 150β200 microns of self-healing urethane film laid over the paint; a ceramic coating is a bonded SiO2 layer one to two microns thick.
- A ceramic coating stops no stone chips β one or two microns cannot absorb a stone thrown up on the E11.
- Dubai pricing: PPF AED 3,500β6,000 for a front kit and AED 6,900β22,000 full body; ceramic AED 1,499β7,000+ by tier.
- Honest life in Dubai: PPF 5β10 years with a registered warranty; a professionally applied ceramic 2β5 years, not the nine it is marketed on.
- The 9H figure on every coating brochure is a self-reported pencil-hardness rating, not a scratch-resistance rating.
- The standard Dubai combination is film on the impact zones first, then a coating over the film and the uncovered panels.
What each one actually is
PPF is a clear aliphatic TPU film, 150 to 200 microns thick β roughly 8 mil β laid over the paint and finished with a self-healing top coat. Its job is absorbing physical damage: stone chips, sand abrasion and light scratches, with your original colour still visible underneath. That matters more here than almost anywhere, because the sand carried across Dubai is silica at Mohs hardness 7, harder than glass and far harder than clear coat.
A ceramic coating is one to two microns of glass-like SiO2 resin cross-linked onto the clear coat. It resists UV and the chemical staining from bird lime and industrial fallout, holds gloss for years, and makes a fortnightly wash a ten-minute job because dust stops keying into the paint. In a city where a clean car looks dusty by Thursday, that is the benefit owners feel weekly β but it changes how the surface behaves, it is not armour.
Head to head for Dubai conditions
This is the comparison to hold in your head when a shop quotes a 'ceramic paint protection package' without saying which product it means. Sealant and wax are here because they get sold in the same conversation at a fraction of the life.

What a ceramic coating cannot do
The 9H figure on the brochure is a pencil-hardness rating, self-reported by the manufacturer, describing what a pencil lead does to the cured film in a lab. It is not a scratch-resistance rating. A coating will not stop a key scratch, sand abrasion along the lower doors, or a bumper meeting a car park ramp β that is the job of 150 to 200 microns of film, not of one or two.
Two further myths are worth killing before you spend. A coating is not self-cleaning: desert silica still needs a proper wash every two to three weeks, and dry-wiping a dusty coated panel abrades the surface exactly as it abrades bare paint. And a coating is not a repair β it is optically clear and locks in whatever sits underneath, so swirls and etching stay put under a layer meant to last years. Any shop willing to coat your car without discussing paint correction is quoting for the cheap half of the job.
What each costs in Dubai
PPF is priced on coverage and film grade. A front kit covering bonnet, bumper, mirrors and headlights runs AED 3,500β6,000; full body runs AED 6,900β15,500 in standard film and AED 16,000β22,000 in premium 10-year film such as XPEL Ultimate Plus, STEK DYNOshield or SunTek Reaction. The floor is real: a genuine roll of premium TPU costs a shop roughly AED 5,000β7,000 wholesale, which is why certified installers rarely quote full-body clear film on a sedan below about AED 6,500.
Ceramic is priced on durability tier and, more than owners expect, on paint condition. Entry coatings rated one to two years run AED 1,499β2,500, mid-tier systems around five years AED 3,000β5,000, and premium systems rated up to nine or ten years start at AED 7,000. The AED 599β900 'ceramic special' below that ladder is a spray sealant over unprepared paint. Correction is the real variable: two-stage work adds roughly AED 600β1,200, a swirled used car AED 1,000β2,500.
| Package | Dubai installed | Rated life | What decides the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic β entry | AED 1,499 β 2,500 | 1β2 years | Decon wash plus a single-stage polish |
| Ceramic β mid-tier | AED 3,000 β 5,000 | ~5 years | One to two correction stages, branded coating |
| Ceramic β premium system | AED 7,000+ | Up to 9β10 years | Multi-stage correction, accredited applicator |
| PPF β front / partial kit | AED 3,500 β 6,000 | 5β10 years | Film tier; covers where chips land |
| PPF β full body, standard film | AED 6,900 β 15,500 | 5β10 years | Car size and disassembly hours |
| PPF β full body, premium film | AED 16,000 β 22,000 | 10 years, registered | Flagship film plus a transferable warranty |
How long each really lasts in Gulf heat
Every durability rating you read was written for a temperate market. Dark panels parked in the open here reach 82 to 95 degrees, and sustained heat accelerates the oxidation that ends a coating's life. Read the manufacturer's number at its low end: professional coatings realistically give two to five years rather than the five to nine they are sold on.
Film fails by chemistry rather than wear. Genuine aliphatic TPU β what XPEL, STEK, 3M and SunTek all use β resists yellowing for ten years and is warranted to; aromatic TPU yellows in two to four years, and the PVC or TPH sold as cheap 'PPF' yellows within six to eighteen months. Heat even helps real film, because self-healing top coats are heat-activated. For coatings the daily enemy is water: sprinkler overspray and unfiltered wash water dry into mineral deposits that can begin etching within hours under summer sun.
| Product | UV behaviour | At 82β95Β°C panel temperatures | Realistic UAE life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aliphatic TPU film (premium brands) | Resists yellowing 10+ years | Self-healing speeds up; adhesive stable | 10 years, warranted |
| Aromatic TPU film (budget genuine) | Yellows in 2β4 years | Adhesive softens; edges lift | 2β4 years |
| PVC / TPH film (fakes, cheap offers) | Yellows in 6β18 months | Hazes, cracks, edges lift | 1β2 summers |
| Professional ceramic coating | Excellent | Heat accelerates oxidation of the layer | 2β5 years |
| Retail spray 'ceramic' | Poor | Degrades quickly | Months |
Film first, coating second β and what keeps the cover alive
For a car you intend to keep, the Dubai answer is both, in sequence. Film goes on bare, corrected paint; the coating then goes over the film and the uncovered panels so the whole car sheds water and dust the same way. Reverse it and you pay for correction twice. One exception: some premium films already carry a hydrophobic ceramic layer β STEK's HYDROphobe is factory-standard, XPEL sells it as Ultimate Fusion, SunTek uses HydroResist and Tetrashield β so ask what a separate coating adds on those panels.
Warranty terms are where the two diverge, and where owners lose money quietly. Ceramic Pro Gold packages start at AED 7,000 and the lifetime cover stays valid only while you pay an annual Elite Dealer inspection at AED 550β1,100 a year β AED 5,500β11,000 across ten years. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra gives nine years with no paid inspection, and Gyeon rates its flagship at 50 months or 50,000 km, with brush washes voiding it outright.
PPF warranties turn on one word: registered. A manufacturer warranty is recorded in your name against the install date and the roll's batch code, survives the shop closing, and usually transfers to the next owner. It covers the film failing as a material β yellowing, hazing, cracking, staining, delamination β but not stone chips, because absorbing those is the product working. Our paint protection film in Dubai hub lists 86 installers, 54 of them in Al Quoz; the ceramic coating in Dubai hub covers the coating side in the same depth.
If you can only buy one
On a limited budget with a daily driver, a mid-tier ceramic at AED 3,000β5,000 is the better first purchase. It protects the whole car against what Dubai does daily β UV, dust cementing, hard-water etching β and a front kit can follow later at AED 3,500β6,000.
Reverse that if chips and sand abrasion are the actual worry. A car doing Sheikh Zayed Road or Emirates Road daily collects them on the bonnet, bumper and mirror caps long before anything happens to the doors, and those are the panels a body shop charges most to blend. Dark paint, a car kept beyond three years, or anything exotic argues for film first β a coating can go over it later, but a chipped bonnet cannot be un-chipped.

FAQs
- Is PPF or ceramic coating better for the UAE climate?
- They solve different problems. PPF resists stone chips and sand abrasion; ceramic resists UV, staining and water spots and makes dust easier to rinse off. Most Dubai owners who keep their cars end up with both.
- Can you apply ceramic coating over PPF, and in which order?
- Film first, coating second. PPF goes on bare, corrected paint; the coating then goes over the film and the uncovered panels so the whole car sheds water the same way. Coating first means paying for correction twice.
- If I can only afford one, which should I get?
- For a daily driver on a budget, a mid-tier ceramic at AED 3,000β5,000 covers the whole car. Add a front PPF kit at AED 3,500β6,000 later, where chips actually land. If chips are already your problem, reverse it.
- Does ceramic coating make a car scratch-proof?
- No β the most common ceramic myth. The 9H figure is a self-reported pencil-hardness rating from a lab, not a scratch-resistance rating. A coating stops no stone chips, key scratches or sand abrasion. Only film physically absorbs those.
- Is 'PPF coating' the same as ceramic coating?
- No, and the phrasing causes real confusion here. 'PPF coating' is how many Dubai shops describe paint protection film, a physical film around 8 mil thick. Ask whether you are quoted a film or a liquid before comparing numbers.
- How long does each actually last in Dubai?
- Genuine aliphatic TPU film lasts 5β10 years with a registered warranty. Professional ceramic coatings realistically give two to five years here rather than the brochure's five to nine, because dark panels reach 82β95Β°C and heat accelerates oxidation.
- My film already has a hydrophobic top coat β do I still need a coating?
- On those panels, possibly not. STEK DYNOshield includes HYDROphobe as standard, XPEL sells Ultimate Fusion for the same reason, SunTek uses HydroResist and Tetrashield. The uncovered panels still benefit, so ask your installer.
- What does it cost to do both on a sedan in Dubai?
- A common pairing is a front PPF kit at AED 3,500β6,000 with a mid-tier coating at AED 3,000β5,000 over the whole car. Full-body standard film at AED 6,900β15,500 with a coating over it sits at the other end.
- Is a ceramic coating worth it on a leased car?
- Match durability to how long you keep the car. An entry or mid-tier coating keeps a lease car easy to wash without paying for nine-year chemistry that Dubai heat cuts to two to five years anyway.
