How to spot fake PPF in Dubai: 6 checks before you pay

Why this is a Dubai problem

Two things make counterfeiting worth doing here. The first is demand: film is close to standard equipment, sold everywhere as 'PPF coating', and our paint protection film in Dubai hub lists 86 installers in the city alone, 54 of them in Al Quoz. Full-body 'DYNOshield matte' gets advertised around AED 8,000 — a number that only works with grey-imported or counterfeit rolls, no registered warranty, or an install rushed into a day.

Summer air hits 45°C, dark panels reach 80–95°C in direct sun, and airborne sand is silica at Mohs hardness 7 — harder than clear coat. Genuine aliphatic TPU shrugs all three off for a decade. Aromatic TPU yellows in two to four years. PVC and TPH, which is what most fake film is, yellows in 6–18 months. The six checks, before you pay

1. Warranty registration. Ask them to register the manufacturer warranty in your name and show the confirmation before you pay the balance. This is the killer test, because fakes fail it every time — a counterfeit roll has no batch the manufacturer will recognise. Everything else here is supporting evidence.

2. The backing liner. Genuine rolls carry the brand's watermark on the liner; ask to see the roll the film will come off, not a laminated sample card. 3. The batch code. Premium brands print verifiable batch or lot codes, and the code goes on your registration, so ask which one they will record.

4. Pre-cut patterns. Certified shops plot patterns for your exact model — 3M approves its films for use with its own pattern software, so a shop cutting digitally rather than trimming on your paint is a reasonable sign. 5. Edge wrapping. Genuine installs wrap edges on removable panels; rushed jobs cut at the panel line, which lifts and collects dirt within months. 6. The price. A full car uses most of a roll that cost the shop thousands, so full-body 'XPEL' or 'DYNOshield' at AED 5,000 is not a deal, it is a costume.

What 'registered' means at each brand

Registration works differently at every manufacturer, and knowing which applies turns a vague promise into a checkable fact. XPEL warranties are registered by the installer through XPEL's own portal, and you should receive documentation naming the exact product and the panels covered; XPEL's public installer directory lists certified installers across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Fujairah, so check the shop there rather than on its own website.

STEK is strictest on timing: the DYNO warranty must be registered on STEK's ONE platform within 30 days of installation, and you activate it yourself from a confirmation email — if that email has not arrived, chase the installer inside the window, because once it closes there is nothing to correct. 3M sells its automotive films through authorised installers rather than over the counter, and the warranty card is the actual contract. SunTek does not publish its full warranty document online, so read the dealer's copy before you commit and insist it names the specific product, the install date and your VIN.

What genuine and fake film do after six months

Day one they look identical, which is the trap. The differences appear in a predictable order: water spotting first, because the fake has no working hydrophobic topcoat; then edge lift, as thermal cycling stresses a cheap adhesive while panels swing tens of degrees between a July afternoon and the small hours; then the tell-tale yellow by the second summer.

Removal is where the real bill arrives. Genuine film peels clean with heat, leaving paint intact. Counterfeit film tears into strips and its adhesive can lift clear coat, especially after baking through a UAE summer. So the true cost of a cheap install is the install, plus removal, plus paint repair, plus doing it properly afterwards — which is why cheap film is the most expensive option on the menu.

The checks after collection, and what to do if it is already on

Some tells only appear once the car is back in your hands, so walk round it in daylight before the shop closes. Run a finger along the bonnet edge and the door shuts: film cut on the surface leaves a hard line that catches dirt within weeks, while a wrapped edge feels continuous. Check bumper corners for silvering and headlight edges, where cheap film peels first. View panels in low sun for orange peel or haze, then pour water over the bonnet — genuine premium film beads and sheds, fake film sheets and spots.

If you already suspect the film, do not panic-peel it. Bad film removed badly does more damage than leaving it while you plan. Have a certified studio test a hidden edge to see whether it releases or tears, then quote removal; done with heat and patience, most paint survives fine. Then re-film with something that registers.
